Hearing Loss & Dementia
In 2017 an article by the Lance Commission on Dementia Prevention Intervention and Care estimated up to 35% of dementia could be prevented due to modifiable risk factors, the biggest of those is hearing loss.
Moderate to severe hearing impairment had a 29-57% greater risk of cognitive impairment than those with normal hearing.
Cognitive studies found people wearing hearing devices improved their performance on perception, discernment, awareness, comprehension, learning and understanding. When hearing devices are prescribed at the onset of age-related hearing loss, this postpones cognitive decline.
Earwax Compaction & Removal
Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a natural function of the human body and is produced to clean and protect the ear. Without its moisturizing benefits, our ears would be dry and itchy all the time. Earwax typically comes out on its own as our ears are self-cleaning. Earwax is produced by the ear to clean and protect itself. It's secreted by glands in the skin that line the other half of your ear canals. The wax and tiny hairs in these passages trap dust and other foreign particles that could damage deeper structures, such as your eardrum. Through general movements like chewing and talking, most people never need to clean their ears on their own. When people attempt to clean their ears with a cotton swab or bobby pin, it can push back any earwax towards the eardrum, thus causing a buildup inside the ear canal. Too Much Earwax is Not a Good Thing! While people with too little earwax are likely to experience itchy ears that are more prone to infection, an ear canal blocked up with earwax can cause earaches, mild hearing loss, a sensation of fullness in the ear, tinnitus, infections and other problems. If this buildup goes untreated, it can cause difficulty hearing, pain in the ear, ringing in the ear or a feeling of your ear being stuffed. What Should You Do? Come into our office and let us take a peak into your ears. It's one of the first things we check for and one of the easiest hearing issues to treat. After removing any blockage, your hearing could return to a normal state without any further treatments. We even have a device that allows us to show you what is going on in your ear too! We can take a picture of your ear canals, videosctopy!
